George Washigton essays George Washington played an important role in American history. Hes known as the Founding Father of our countrys government. He is also, the leader who won independence. Who would have thought that the son of a Virginia planter would accomplish so much in such little time? Washingtons journey began early when he met the well known Fairfax family. At this time, he had no knowledge of the excitement that was ahead of him. Nor, did he know the courage he had within him. Although George was fond of action, he wanted to keep peace, if he could, when it came to war. Courage, action, and peace led George Washington to Presidency. He was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. According to Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia, He later moved to Mount Vernon (q.v.), the home of his elder half- brother, Lawrence Washington (d.1752), who was allied with the powerful Fairfax (q.v.) family of Virginia. George eventually came into the possession of the Mount Vernon property when Lawrence died.(446). The Fairfax family owned an enormous amount of land. They wanted George to head west and help survey their property. By going on this journey, he found a love for the land. A few years later he began surveying for others. In 1753 he was appointed adjutant of one of the districts into which Virginia was divided, with the rank of major.(447). This was the beginning of George Washingtons political career. During the French and Indian War, he was a messenger. He took notice of the opposing sides tactics. He searched for any way to find out as much as possible to help. He was a success. Georges next bit of adventure came at Fort Duquesne. At this fort, well over half of the British troops were killed along with their general. Carmen Brown, a witness, says that the woman had asked the staff to check her restraints shortly before the ride was starting. The gentleman then, nonchalantly, told her that as long as it clicked it was okay. Nothing else was ever done to ensure the woman’s restraints were secure. Some witnesses have reported that as the rollercoaster was making a turn the woman was thrown out. The name of the victim and any further information has not been released. It is suspected that the woman was with her son. When the train had returned from the ride, it was reported that two people were shouting, one was screaming â€Å"My mom† â€Å"My mom†. The rollercoaster staff parked the train far enough away from the platform so no one was allowed get off of the train. www.dallasnews.com Due to the traumatic experience and people fearing the safety of the rides at Six Flags, the company will probably lose a good portion of money because people will not want or continue going to their park. This accident has caused an unexpected economic change in not only Six Flags but in all other amusement parks as well. Society will now have this negative view on amusement parks which means, for a little while at least, they will not want to go to the parks. This will cause the parks income to decline which can be very bad for the company, especially for Six Flags, who declared bankruptcy in 2009. When society loses trust in something they will usually pull back their economic support, leaving companies with fewer customers. It is important that companies and organizations remember that they have to keep the customer happy and safe. If not they will no longer have any customers. The majority of the people that witnessed the tragic event of the woman falling to her death due to a mechanical issue will probably no longer return to the park and they will likely have a large influence on their friends and family to not trust the park as well.

Before I became indie rock literate I would not have been able to understand the above quote from a concert flier. Someone who is indie rock illiterate might read it as an add for a brothel, featuring the use of tools, and hairy fast women of all ages. On the other hand, someone who is indie rock literate would know to read it as "tonight at the concert venue called Tramps there will be a show featuring the bands Chisel, Fuzzy and Velocity Girl, it costs seven dollars to get in and you may be any age to attend." I used to watch my friends Mike and Zoe with awe and jealousy. They had found a way into the seemingly elite world of indie rock (independent rock music). They bought the records, wore the clothes, and most importantly they spoke the language. The language was one that sounded a lot like English, but it was filled with words and phrases like "Brownie's," "Bikini Kill," and "all ages show". It was clear that although these could be taken as normal English words they had other meanings, meanings with which I was not familiar. I wondered how these friends of mine had managed to obtain their passports into this land of mystery, wonder, and seven-inch singles. I now know that there is not a secret handshake that gets a person into the indie rock scene. Nor is there a panel of ultra-cool guardians hiding out in rock clubs deciding who's in and who's out. There is merely a certain type of literacy that one eventually picks up if one observes and listens and lets oneself become part of the scene. Just like any other kind of literacy, nobody is born with it, it needs to be learned. My transition from illiteracy to literacy in this area has become something of a blur for me. I'm not sure when or how I became indie rock literate, but I am now. One of the most important aspects of this form of literacy is that it enables me to talk to people about something that I am interested in. Being indie rock literate, it is easier to clearly convey thoughts and ideas that have to do with the world that particular subculture within American popular culture.

What Not to Write in Your SOP Its always a daunting task: writing your statement of purpose. You sit down at the computer, staring at the blank screen, wondering what you can possibly say to make the admissions committee realize that they must choose you. Nervous and riddled with anxiety, you begin to type, focusing on what you know best: how youve always wanted to attend this school (because its the very best) and how everyone tells you that you would be perfect there. Youre off to a good start, right? Maybe not.As an academic editor, Ive seen hundreds of admissions essays but only a handful of unique approaches. When youre among a pool of applicants, you must do everything that you can to stand out from the crowd. Not creative, you say? Dont despair. By avoiding a few common pitfalls, youll already be ahead of the pack. Many application essays suffer from the same common mistakes, but you can avoid them with these tips. Here are the top 4 statements to avoid in your SOP:1. Ive always wanted to be a ______.The u niversal adage of show, dont tell most definitely applies here. Think back to when you first learned about your career of choice. What did the moment feel like? How did you know that this was something you wanted to pursue? Create a picture in the readers mind to illustrate your enthusiasm for the profession, rather than just telling them that its something youve always wanted. Why do you want to pursue this goal? If you can effectively articulate why this profession appeals to you, youll come across as a serious candidate with a clear goal in mind.2. I really wanted to go somewhere else, but for now, Im applying to your school.You never want to seem desperate to be accepted, and you dont want to sound like this is your second choice (even if it is!). Maybe you had a change in career plans, but explain your current goals and emphasize your readiness to attend the program. Focus on your strengths and the positive attributes that you bring to academic settings in general. You might ha ve future goals that are unrelated or that extend beyond this program, but the purpose of the essay is to explain why you would be an asset to this school in particular. You definitely dont want to sound like youre using the program as a stepping stone to get somewhere else.3. Your school is the best in the world!They already know that theyre the best- thats why youre at their mercy, pleading for acceptance. Be more specific about why you have chosen this particular program. Its not enough to say that they have the best professors, coolest classes, etc. Is there one person whose work mirrors your own or who has inspired you? These types of details will make all the difference because they show what motivates you to attend. A motivated student is more likely to work hard because they have a passion for the subject. Not every school is right for every person. Focus on showing that you have made an informed choice about where you want to attend.4. Look at my grades- how could you not a ccept me?Your statement of purpose is only one part of your application, along with your transcript, resume, and, in some cases, references. The SOP should be personal. It gives you a chance to reveal the story behind the application, to discuss the moments in your life that led you to the present path. Dont waste time by reiterating details that can be found somewhere else in your application. Unless youre describing how you felt during a particular accomplishment (for example, when you won a prestigious award), leave it out. You dont need to include everything that youve done in the past few years. Make it relevant to what youre doing today and, more importantly, to what you hope to be doing in the future.So now that you know what not to write, how do you decide what you should write? Its easier than it sounds. Start by making a list of your greatest achievements. How did each of these accomplishments make you feel? Think back to when you first began on this career path and descri be your journey. List your best attributes, and remember times when you showcased these abilities. Naturally, since the tests are expensive and you want to take them while the material is still fresh in your mind, you may want to make up the exam. In this article, I’ll go over what to do if you know in advance you won’t make the test, what to do in an emergency, how AP late testing works, and situations where you might not be able to make up the test- and what to do about it. What to Do When You Know In Advance You'll Miss the Test There are a variety of reasons that you may find that the exam you signed up for a few months ago conflicts with something you can’t avoid. As soon as you realize you mayhave a conflict with the exam, you will need to get in touch with your school’s AP coordinator to discuss AP late testing. They will let you know if the test can be made up and how, when, and where it will happen. If you do not know who your AP coordinator is, ask someone in the school office or a guidance counselor. Your school may also have some kind of designated process for requesting late testing that someone in the main office can tell you about. For making up tests when you know about the conflict in advance, there are two scenarios: the College Board deems your conflict either "unavoidable" or "avoidable." Unavoidable Conflicts For those conflicts which the College Board deems â€Å"unavoidable,† they will allow you to take the make-up exam for free. Unavoidable conflicts include: You are taking two AP exams that are scheduled for the same time slot, or you are taking three or more AP exams that are scheduled for the same day. Check the 2016 schedule to see if this is you. You have an IB exam, or a state or national exam, the same day. Scheduling issues with the language lab at your school (this would primarily be a problem for foreign language exams). It is a religious holiday. The school is closed for an election or a national holiday. There is an issue with your disability accommodations (that you know about in advance). Sorry I couldn't make my AP exam; I was busy hatching. Avoidable Conflicts For other conflicts, which the College Board views as â€Å"avoidable,† you will be allowed to take the exam later, but you will need to pay a fee of $45. This fee is waived for those who qualify for financial assistance. Avoidable conflicts include: You have an academic event or meet (e.g. a quiz bowl or math team competition). You have a sports meet or game that conflicts with the exam. You have an exam for a class the same day. In this situation it may make more sense to arrange to take the class exam at a different time if you can instead of taking a late AP test. Your school makes a mistake when ordering the exam. (For example, they do not order enough copies for everyone who registered.) In this case your school will likely cover the fee. It is a school holiday (pre-planned, not a national holiday, and not an emergency). You have a family commitment. If you are not sure if your conflict qualifies you to take a late exam, discuss it with your AP coordinator. They will be the one who ultimately coordinates all late testing for your school. However, you can’t count on that, so don’t be like this person who went back to her house because she forgot a pen and then decided to try an alternate route to the school (someone will loan you a pen if you forget it!) Pack your bag with everything you need the night before and leave for school early. If worst comes to worst and you miss the exam (and can’t make it up), your hopes and dreams are not dead. You will probably be out the ninety bucks you paid for the exam (although you may be able to negotiate that with your school’s exam coordinator) but it won’t appear on a score report or anything. No one will know you missed the exam, and colleges don’t necessarily expect that you will take the AP exam for every AP-level class you take. If you still want the college credit or the score, you can take the test next year, although you will probably have to put in some serious study time to remember everything.
